Find out how to win €50k with your smart ageing idea

It is estimated that by 2020 up to 100 billion devices will be connected to the rapidly emerging Internet of Things (IoT). And that’s just a start as more and more sensors, actuators and microcontrollers are embedded into virtually everything on the planet. At the centre of the IoT, of course, are not things at all, but us – human being, making use of the applications and services these connections enable. There is little doubt that the IoT is going to revolutionise the way we live.

Perhaps one of the greatest opportunities the IOT provides will be to enable older people to live more active, healthy lives for longer, at home and in a connected, exciting world. Another big statistic for our world to come is that by 2060, a third of Europeans will be over 65 – so not only is there a need to provide IOT devices for the older person, the size of the market is huge – the silver economy is going to make a lot of people a lot of money.

The AAL Programme has recognised this and has launched a new Challenge Prize for Smart Ageing, which is offering a €50,000 top prize for the best IOT innovation for older people. It’s a fantastic opportunity for startups, entrepreneurs and researchers working on IOT solutions to get some serious funding in place to take their ideas to market.

A special webinar is taking place on Wednesday this week at 9am GMT (10am CET), during which the prize will be explained in detail. The webinar will also discuss the enormous opportunities the IOT brings to smart ageing. Ovidiu Vermesan of the European IOT Research Cluster is one of the expert panelist and he will be shedding light on the amazing possibilities of of the IOT.
